Our first destination was the beautiful Maldives. Our aim was to relax a little from the last minute stress of organising, planning and packing for our one year trip. We stayed on Fulidhoo, one of the "local" islands in the Maldives. Fulidhoo is a rather small island with about 400 inhabitants and is famous for its sting ray and nurse shark observation points near the pier, where they are regularly fed. Many tourists from nearby resorts come to the island on day trips just to get pictures with them. As we were staying on the island, we were able to observe them every day, before the crowds of tourists arrived.
As November and December marks the delivery season for black tip reef sharks, we were able to spot quite a few around the island.
We booked some excursions to swim with nurse sharks, dolphins and turtles and snorkel around the house coral reef where we also spotted quite a few clown fish. Swimming with dolphins was absolutely fascinating. Although nurse sharks are one of the friendliest sharks and are not aggressive towards humans, they looked quite intimidating and scary from underwater. We also spotted a few reef sharks swimming among them.
Staying on one of the local islands alongside the locals gave us a good insight into local culture and daily life on the island, which is exactly the experience we were looking for. We observed the locals playing sports every day like football, playing cards , collecting rubbish and hanging out at the local cafes. Maldivians are extremely friendly and will even greet you on the "street", as Fulidhoo is a small island and everyone knows each other.
A few things to note when staying on the island:
As the Maldives is a Muslim country, there are no alcoholic beverages sold, served or consumed on the island and it is forbidden to bring alcohol in. Ladies are expected to cover up their shoulders and wearing a bikini is forbidden on the local beaches, however there is a designated bikini beach, which is also the most beautiful beach on the island in our opinion. Locals do not come to this beach but stay on the local beaches.
Food
Fulidhoo offers delicious local food that is a must try on the island. Our favourite is the local grilled fish, which is freshly prepared and well seasoned. It was one of the best grilled fish that we have every tried. Another favourite dish of ours was the local pumpkin curry. Also the Maldivian breakfast is interesting served with a paste made out of tuna, coconut, onion, lime and chilli. Definitely also try the fresh fruit juices and smoothies! Fresh coconut juice can be bought around the island, They will slice the coconut open right in front of you.
